Build Trust

Trust is the confidence that we have in the reliability, integrity, and honesty of another. We can develop trust through honest, open, and transparent communication and practices. Building trust creates psychological safety which allows people to be willing to take considered risks, speak their minds, be creative, and more easily discuss difficult problems and issues.

How you can demonstrate this behaviour in practice:

Demonstrate empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and share someone else’s feelings, and by demonstrating it you will support colleagues and build strong connections. This requires strong active listening skills. Take an interest in the lives of the people around you, recognise the challenges they face and how they feel, and offer support.

Be authentic

To demonstrate leadership, your values must be reflected in your behaviours to gain others’ confidence and trust. It is important to recognise that there are many different leadership styles, and you may adjust your style to your audience and situation, whilst remaining true to those core values.

Recognise different perspectives

The ability to challenge our own perspective by understanding and acknowledging the perspectives of others is a key leadership skill. Recognising that certain groups face additional barriers to participation, we need to foster inclusive environments that welcome diverse perspectives and disrupt “groupthink” and bias.  Be curious, be open, and become an advocate for marginalised groups.
