Do The Right Thing
(not the easy thing)
How you can demonstrate this behaviour in practice:
Make decisions
Leadership involves making responsible decisions based on the information available at the time. Ensure decisions are aligned to our shared values and those of the people around you. By making decisions in a timely manner, you will aim to identify and mitigate risks, whilst accepting a degree of uncertainty and compromise. This is necessary to avoid decision paralysis and to capitalise on opportunities. Open and transparent communication is an important element of the decision-making process: gathering information, engaging key stakeholders and showing your reasoning.
Be proactive
In challenging situations, effective leadership requires taking action in a timely, appropriate and fair way. Examples of these situations include problem-solving, resolving conflict, addressing unacceptable behaviour, and managing under-performance. It is important not to allow these situations to fester and become worse. We do not tolerate harassment in any form, and we must hold to account those responsible for inappropriate behaviour. We must be prepared to challenge bias and ensure an environment of respect for everyone, regardless of their background or identity.
Take responsibility
We have moral, ethical, and social responsibilities: both to the communities in which we work, as well as broader responsibilities in the furthering of knowledge for the good of society and the environment. Speak up when shared values are undermined. Consider the impact of your actions and decisions on others and on the wider environment. Take accountability for the consequences of your actions, both in the short term and from a long-term perspective.
